Ried is located right in the center of the Zillertal
The small village of Ried is surrounded by many 3,000m mountains forming part of the Tux Alps and the Zillertal Alps. It has a population of 1,279 and lies in the heart of the Zillertal Valley on the banks of the Ziller river.
The village marks the start of the Zillertal High Elevation Road, a strip of tarmac winding its way from the valley floor up to an altitude of between 1,700m and 2,100m and offering stunning views of the mountain landscape. The Zillertalbahn railway, which sometimes still operates steam engines, stops in Ried on its way through the Zillertal Valley. Skiers and snowboarders can explore the two nearby resorts of Hochfügen-Hochzillertal and Spieljoch, both of which are known as après-ski hotspots. In summer there is the Wildbachklamm gorge and the Schlitterer Wasserfall to visit as well as the spa and leisure centre in Fügen and the high rope adventure park in nearby Kaltenbach.
